Ospreycam is back!

Hi All,
Just a quick note the webcam is back up and streaming live. The adults have lost the smallest of the chicks--three chicks rarely survive to fledging (of course anything is possible). In fact, some researchers consider the third egg like a type of insurance policy against one of the eggs not hatching. So, the good news is that there are two healthy osprey chicks for you to check up on.
I'll post again soon. Just a quick update. Enjoy!
All the Best,

6/10 All seems fine with the two chicks, I've watched a number of feedings today & yesterday and all seemed normal. Hope the attack was short lived - it seems that each day that passes increases the chance the smallest will survive his sibling. Too bad it's wet today...but mom has them both covered right up.

I, too, have been concerned about the aggressive larger chick. As I reported yesterday, both chicks were being fed.

I did not have time to leave another comment re what I observed after my first post.

The larger chick apparently had its fill and the smaller chick was being fed with no interference. Actually, the larger chick took time out to preen.

The adult, however, managed to pick up a twig and place it on the smaller chick. The adult then seem confused as to why the chick did not take more food ... apparently unaware of the struggle the chick was having with the twig! Anyway, the little one managed to get out from under the twig and feeding commenced until the chick turned away, very well fed.

With luck, the little one will be able to outgrow the threat from its sibling. One day at a time, as they say.

Just observed the tail end of another feeding. The adult reached over the small chick to continually feed the larger one until the larger chick turned away. At that point feeding was directed to the small chick.

Unfortunately, the small chick stopped feeding and seemed to lie flat. The larger moved back and had a few more bites before again leaving the adult.

The adult stood ready with more food for the small chick but the little one did not raise its head.

I am concerned by the increasing difference in size and wonder if the smaller chick might not be well?

Is this size difference normal for osprey? By this age should the smaller chick be catching up? Would gender account for the size difference? Is the small chick just getting much less food?

So many questions. Still hoping for a positive outcome for both chicks.

Hi JAM...I hope I can put your mind at ease a little about the feeding this morning you referred too. I started to watch it as it began at about 10:10-10:15. The fish was big and I think that's part of the reason the feeding lasted so long & both chicks were sooo satisfied that they are now flopped out asleep on the nest - 12:15.

For the first minute of the feeding the big one was getting a little more as it towered over the smaller one (see pix on the boards) but the mom feed the small one waaaay more in the first 15 -20 minutes of the feeding than the big chick. I saw her go to the small one 7 times in a row!, feed the big one once, then go back to the little one for a few more. The little guy got a very full share, probably as much as his little belly could hold. But so did the big one, towards the end he walked away for a few minutes & mom continued to feed the smaller til it wanted no more....I think that's why it didn't raise it's head - it couldn't from being so full!! She kept trying to feed both but they really seemed full and just nibbled after awhile.

I think they're both fine, and we're just seeing the "pecking order" of older/younger if you will. Because food is plentiful I don't think we'll see the demise of the little guy.....

its amazeing how the little chick has started to turn darker, like big one is now.. with lots of fish availble, both should grow up and fly away... guess that both will be ok..hope so anyway..

6/12 8a.m.
There was some serious additions added to the nest this morning, two thick branches were brought in by the male & added to the front edge of the nest. The chicks are getting better at ducking to avoid the whacks from the moving stick! Some feeding happening around 8. Enjoy

Mon 6/14 a feeding happening around 10:15 this morning and the smalles t chick is getting darker & bigger! I didn't think it'd catch up to the big one in size but it may be happening! The poplar branches were brought in before the damp, cool weather of the weekend, the chicks were nestled right into them.

6/17 a.m. The chicks are changing so fast, the older one's markings are becoming less 'stripy'....and size wise, little one is doing great!

What a wonderful experience to be able to watch this osprey nest ... including the nail biting as I worried about the "little" one! Thank you, BRI, for making it possible and thanks to all who shared comments.

Do we know if this is the same pair from last year? When these guys fledge, will they stay in or return to the area? I still have lots to learn about osprey. Wouldn't it be fantastic to have a camera on one of the young to enable a bird's eye view!

Morning all - sometime on Sunday, the 18th between 7 & 8 a.m. the first osprey fledged! It is gone from the nest all morning, giving the other sibling room to stretch its wings & get ready for it's own flight!
If this chick hatched 3 days after the first one, it should be 3 more days before this baby goes off to new adventures.
Thanks Patrick, and all at BRI who make this possible. So wonderful

Afternoon all 7/22 4pm....looks like the osprey re-fledged! Appears I was wrong earlier, one was not in camera view most of the day on the 18th, but then when it re-appeared it didn't leave the nest again til today. Any one at BRI have anything to say?

Sad that the cam has been down this long. I was hoping it would be fixed and live as long as the osprey were present. Any word from BRI?

Just did some Sunday driving after attending the state quilt show in Augusta and we stopped in to see the osprey. There was a baby on the nest doing a lot of crying out as 2 others rode the winds nearby. One of the soaring birds looked like an adult & it perched on the cell tower on the other side of the restaurant after it's flight.
Inside the restaurant in their lobby their screen is functioning so you can see baby hanging out waiting for someone to bring a fish!!
Too bad there's not more interaction between us & BRI so as to enliven the group and motivate donations. At any rate, the osprey have been wonderful to watch this season and I appreciate all that we got! Thanks

I passed by the taste of maine resturant on saturday, Nov 27. 2010.. the osprey nest is now inside the resturant !!!and it looks like a new nest pole is being made ready, on the other side of the resturant...seems strange, as no updates have been posted, in months on the osprey blog....Would some one from BRI PLEASE ??? post what is going on ?? Thank you

Anonymous said...

I tyhink this osprey blog has been closed down...and perhaps will be off line soon.. no new info about the nezt, last years chicks, or the parent osprey have been posted.. what a shame.. IT`S been 9 months..and NOTHING HAS BEEN added / written by BRI..H`mmm maybe bri has closed its doors.. what a shame..

There is anosprey on the nest.. are there any eggs ??

Anonymous said...

YES !!!! There is at least one egg , being kept warm, in the osprey nest...i just happened to open the osprey web cam, and saw the parent, re settleing on the egg..great news !!

The osprey blog seems to always get the short end of the stick. I think sometimes BRI forgets that it's here and that people care about these birds as much as others care about the eagles.
There are nesting now in 2011 and that's great!
What's this about the nest pole changing sides????
